What comes to mind when you hear the word passion? Do you recall being involved in a special project or working hard to reach a goal? Does it stoke memories of the burning desire for a certain lover? Do you associate ‘passion’ with enthusiasm or interest in something esoteric? Does a wide range passion spectrum exist and everyone is somewhere on it?
Recently, I’ve experienced a health event, which prompted me to think about how much time is spent on what I’ll call the regularities of life. You know, those everyday things we just do automatically, either out of habit and/or necessity. From making my bed every morning, to the tooth brushing and face washing that close out each day, and everything in between. It occurred to me that maybe those everyday things were not regular at all. Instead, they are everyday actions that I’m grateful to be able to perform, and not take for granted.
If we rush through our days treating our regularities like something to just get out of the way, maybe we’re missing the point of doing them at all. Without going to the extreme of perfectionism, being mindful of what-why-how we do what we do, can boost our quality of life, and give us a new sense of time. Mindfulness isn’t a new age term, but has ancient roots in Eastern religions and philosophies. It’s simply the awareness and acceptance of the present moment. Mindfulness gives you ownership of each moment, and increases the likelihood that you’ll have the time and ability to do the things you want to do – your passion.
Living a passionate life has its benefits. We should not take for granted the privilege to be alive from moment to moment. This world isn’t perfect, but it is full of possibilities, so be thankful and put on a smile. Your cheerful attitude will make you attractive to people, and help you make friends. Like the classic jazz standard says, “when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.” Also, when you live in the moment, you don’t look backward or forward. No regrets, no fears. Now is all you have, so go for it – with a passion.
In closing . . .
The present moment is all you ever have. There is never a time when your life is not ‘this moment.’ Is this not a fact? – Eckhart Tolle
You got this!
