Live to Give

A few years ago when I began to study the science of happiness, the starting point was my lived experience with retirement. My initial plan was to ‘not’ retire, but to start a business, which after a short while I decided wasn’t for me. After months of increasing frustration with myself for not having enough structure and productivity in my life, everything changed – literally overnight.

I began to volunteer on a regular basis; rediscovered my purpose in life and gave my time, skills and talents to fulfill a mission I believed in. Fast forward four years to when an interviewer asked what drove me to be so effective and enthusiastic. Thoughts of joy filled my head as I gave my response. “Giving is living,” and immediately thought it sounded too simple. Thinking back later, the truth of that gut reactive response became clear. Giving to others was my reason for being.

Giving to others is a deeply human experience that lasts long after the moment has passed. It connects us to others, and in its purest form, brings meaning that cannot be measured in material terms, but in time. Giving time to listen, being present for someone, sharing knowledge, and offering kindness to a stranger has the power to uplift the giver and receiver.

Giving multiplies joy. A single act of generosity can ripple outward, inspiring gratitude, trust and inspire others to commit acts of kindness. When someone receives help in a time of need, they are more likely to extend the same compassion to others. Giving becomes contagious, quietly shaping communities and strengthening social bonds.

Giving does not require abundance. A smile, encouragement, or understanding are gestures that affirm dignity and humanity.

Giving is rebellion against a world that often emphasizes competition and self-interest. It says that kindness matters, compassion has value, and that we are not alone. The joy of giving lies not in recognition or reward, but in the simple truth that when we give sincerely, we enrich not only others’ lives, but our own as well.

Giving is a year-round, life long blessing that can and should be passed around this world.

“The meaning of life is to find your gift.
The purpose of life is to give it away.”

– Pablo Picasso
