You Deserve Better
As soon-to-be retirees, we are inundated with information from professionals and employers to help us plan financially for life during retirement and presumably, the rest of our lives. And while the preparation for our financial future is vital to a comfortable retirement, we are left on our own to construct what is arguably the most important part of our life in retirement: daily life.
Unfortunately, after the initial feeling of relief from a long commute, project deadlines, workplace politics, and other aspects of gainful employment, many retirees feel a loss of identity, meaning and purpose. Regardless of income level or position, our identity is connected to what we contribute to ourselves, families and the world through our jobs and careers. Feelings of emptiness, anxiety, social isolation and depression are far too common among retirees.
Retirement is when you get to decide how you spend your days, and that sounds great. But the reality is that many retirees waste years of valuable time with meaningless activity, trying to fit in where they don’t belong, with people they don’t particularly like, and feeling irrelevant. Just because you have the money, time and freedom to do what you want, doesn’t mean that you won’t be bored, lonely or unfulfilled.
Don’t lean into loneliness or fall into the “I’m too old to change” trap. If you’re not feeling contentment and anticipation with the arrival of each day as you have earned the right to feel, isn’t it your turn?

With the advent of retirement, aging can take up a lot of space in our mind. While the only alternative to aging is death, the reality is that all around us the effects of aging on people we know (and ourselves) are a fact of life; whether they be good or bad.
Don’t make the mistake of believing that your purpose has to be a big thing. But it is a thing. A thing that wakes us up each day. A thing that we do that puts a smile on our face, lifts our spirit and touches our heart. A thing that makes us happy.
